More Justice, More Love Campaign

Celebrating 10 years of helping immigrant neighbors find Justice and Love in their chosen home

Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors celebrates its 10th anniversary with More Justice and More Love.  The first decade of JFON is full of stories of hope from clients, volunteers and staff who were the first to encounter JFON and have made it what it is today. Justice and Love are at the center of our work as we celebrate a decade of providing high quality immigration legal services.  JFON has now become the stories of justice and love as we seek a world where immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers are welcomed, supported and able to live without fear.

Today, we are calling for More Justice and More Love as we face a pandemic that is affecting our immigrant families of color disproportionately.  We are calling for More Justice and More Love as our clients’ day in court is delayed even further by the pandemic. We are calling for More Justice and More Love as we strive to dismantle racist and unjust policies that have broken our immigration system and have separated immigrant families for years.

At Northern Illinois JFON we believe that as we come together to build safe spaces with More Justice and More Love we can break the structures of oppression and fix the broken immigration system to create a path to citizenship where immigrant families can live and thrive in their chosen home. Your support of our local mission to provide free high-quality immigration legal services here in Northern Illinois creates More Justice and More love for our clients and their families.

Every dollar given to JFON goes directly to support legal services for immigrants’ families and creates spaces with More Justice and More Love. We see Justice and Love come to life when a family is reunited after so many years apart. We see Justice and Love take root and flourish when an LGBTQIA asylum seeker is able to live their full life as their full self. We see Justice and Love blossom when a mother living in the shadows of fear for years attends her oath ceremony and shines her light brightly for herself & children.  Thank you for ensuring that NIJFON builds spaces with More Justice and More Love for immigrant families for the next 10 years to come.

Fast from Fear, Feast on Love Lenten Journey

We are an organization rooted in the Christian United Methodist tradition but open to all people.  Our clients, volunteers, staff and Board members reflect a diversity of many traditions, and we always welcome those who are not a part of any faith tradition to help us live out our mission.   Regardless of your tradition or belief, we invite you to join us in fasting from fear and feasting on love.  We must work together for justice and eliminate the policies and actions that cause fear and implement the policies and actions that promote love revealed in community.

At Northern Illinois JFON we believe that this is both individual and communal work of fasting and feasting, of struggling for liberation together, and that the impact is global.  Your support of our local mission to provide free high-quality immigration legal services here in Northern Illinois creates the beloved community for our clients and their families.

Your engagement in education and advocacy for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers helps us move towards a country where there is love etched into each and every policy and law, and a lot less fear and othering.

Our work in building cross-cultural communities continues locally throughout Northern Illinois, changing the narrative of division and fear of other to a real community of justice and equity.

We invite you to prayerfully consider gathering a special offering to donate to NIJFON on the Sunday you lift Jesus’ heart for immigrant justice. Last year the NIC powerful churches that are doing God’s work helped us with our Berry matching campaign and we are so thankful for that. Despite all the economic challenges that many of our churches, our families and our world endured you stood strong Justice with NIJFON! Every dollar given to JFON moves us towards that vision of love. We see that love made real when a family is reunited after so many years apart and when we welcome our immigrant neighbors as God calls us to do.

During the Fast from Fear, Feast on Love Lenten Journey, we will share scripture and reflections weekly to uplift immigrant justice, you can find the Lent calendar readings here.  We also encourage you or your church to invite NIJFON to your weekly Lent celebrations in order to build community in our joint struggle for liberation , please email claudia.marchan@nijfon.org.

Celebrating Bishop Sally’s Retirement

Bishop Sally has been a long time NIJFON supporter and Partner for Justice of Immigrant Rights!

Throughout her tenure, Bishop Sally has been an ardent supporter of NIJFON, not only contributing herself, but also encouraging others to support our legal immigration work. In fact, one of the Bishop’s special offerings at annual conference was for NIJFON.

We at NIJFON are truly thankful for Bishop Sally’s leadership and support and we wish her well in her retirement and on her new journey! Thank you Bishop Sally for supporting immigrant rights and for always being a Partner for Justice!

As a parting gift, the Episcopacy Committee is requesting donations be made in Bishop Dyck’s name to the Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors (NIJFON). The bishop has a strong commitment to immigrant justice and JFON’s ministry, and this is a way we can all honor her together. To give online, click here.

You can also make your donation by check made out to NIJFON and write “Bishop Sally gift” in the memo line. Mail to NIJFON, 77 W. Washington St. Suite 1820, Chicago, IL 60602.

Give the gift of opportunity to our immigrant neighbors.

At Northern Illinois JFON we believe that as we partner together and take local action there are echoes of global hope that resound in the midst of our broken immigration system.

We all have a role in this. We are grateful to have you as our partner in justice. We are in solidarity together as we audaciously work for justice for our immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking neighbors and selves.

Your Donation Is Crucial During this time…

We welcome you to partner with  Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors to make a difference in the lives of the sojourners in our midst in whatever way that you are moved to partner.

With your support we can keep families together.  Making a donation like the suggested amounts below will help us expand these and other services:

$50 Donation: Advice and Counsel – Unfortunately, for some people, under current immigration laws there is nothing they can do to adjust their immigration status. Yet learning the truth about this from a trusted source like JFON has save hundreds of clients from potentially being victims of fraud. A $50 donation is the average cost to provide one family with an advice and counsel consultation.

$200 Donation: Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) – This benefit allows young people who were brought here as children to file an application to get a work permit and a “deferment” of any immigration action against them. Typically these cases take 2-10 hours – your $200 donation represents one young person receiving Deferred Action.

$500 Donation: Family Petitions or Citizenship – These applications typically take about 10-15 hours to file. Your $500 donation could help someone become a Lawful Permanent Resident or Citizen of the United States.

$1000 Donation: U Visas – One of JFON’s most common cases is the U Visa case. The U Visa was created by Congress to encourage undocumented victims of serious crimes to come forward to report crimes without the fear of deportation. These cases involve several steps including interaction with local law enforcement and our attorneys spend anywhere from 20-30 hours on each one.

$5,000 Donation: Asylum – Men, women and children flee their country of origin for many reasons, including being persecuted because of their race, religion, political opinion, or gender. JFON attorneys represent such asylum-seekers to ensure that they will not be forced to return to a country where they will surely face persecution, torture or death. These are among the most time-consuming cases to file, usually between 50-60 hours per case.
