Join NIJFON’s Spring Fundraiser with Teatro Vista on May 13, 2022

On this night exclusive to Justice for Our Neighbors you will preview Somewhere Over the Border with friends and family of NIJFON and support our Spring fundraiser:

Inspired by the real life journey of the author’s mother (Reina Quijada) from El Salvador to the US and by L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Somewhere Over the Border embraces the factual and the fantastical in its depiction of one young girl’s pursuit of the American dream. As Reina travels north to the Mexican border, she gathers friends, faces down dangers, and holds tight to the memory of the little boy she left behind. Set in the 1970s and propelled by Cumbia, Mexican Mariachi Boleros, American Rock and Hip Hop, this new musical is both fable and family history—and a testament to the determination born of love.

This Giving Tuesday, Give More Justice, More Love to Our Immigrant Neighbors

This Giving Tuesday we ask that you give more justice, more love to our immigrant neighbors. Over the last ten years, NIJFON has focused on serving our most vulnerable immigrant communities seeking asylum, worked tirelessly to win every case and ensure that our clients feel welcomed, are reunited with their families, and live without fear. We have served 3,000 cases, representing over 1,000 clients, because of supporters like you.

3 Ways You Can Get Involved with Giving Tuesday Today:

  1. Sponsor 2 clients for an attorney consultation for $100
  2. Become a NIJFON Giving Tuesday Ambassador and help us fundraise
  3. Post a #MoreJusticeMoreLove #UNSELFIE telling your friends why you support #NIJFON (and why they should too!)
If you make a one-time gift of $100+ or become a monthly donor at the $10+ level, you will receive a commemorative, “More Justice, More Love” 10-year anniversary t-shirt!

With your help, we can provide relief to our refugee and asylum-seeking neighbors.

More Justice, More Love Campaign

Celebrating 10 years of helping immigrant neighbors find Justice and Love in their chosen home

Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors celebrates its 10th anniversary with More Justice and More Love.  The first decade of JFON is full of stories of hope from clients, volunteers and staff who were the first to encounter JFON and have made it what it is today. Justice and Love are at the center of our work as we celebrate a decade of providing high quality immigration legal services.  JFON has now become the stories of justice and love as we seek a world where immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers are welcomed, supported and able to live without fear.

Today, we are calling for More Justice and More Love as we face a pandemic that is affecting our immigrant families of color disproportionately.  We are calling for More Justice and More Love as our clients’ day in court is delayed even further by the pandemic. We are calling for More Justice and More Love as we strive to dismantle racist and unjust policies that have broken our immigration system and have separated immigrant families for years.

At Northern Illinois JFON we believe that as we come together to build safe spaces with More Justice and More Love we can break the structures of oppression and fix the broken immigration system to create a path to citizenship where immigrant families can live and thrive in their chosen home. Your support of our local mission to provide free high-quality immigration legal services here in Northern Illinois creates More Justice and More love for our clients and their families.

Every dollar given to JFON goes directly to support legal services for immigrants’ families and creates spaces with More Justice and More Love. We see Justice and Love come to life when a family is reunited after so many years apart. We see Justice and Love take root and flourish when an LGBTQIA asylum seeker is able to live their full life as their full self. We see Justice and Love blossom when a mother living in the shadows of fear for years attends her oath ceremony and shines her light brightly for herself & children.  Thank you for ensuring that NIJFON builds spaces with More Justice and More Love for immigrant families for the next 10 years to come.

Act for Immigrants Campaign

Give the gift of opportunity to our immigrant neighbors.

At Northern Illinois JFON we believe that as we partner together and take local action there are echoes of global hope that resound in the midst of our broken immigration system.

We all have a role in this. We are grateful to have you as our partner in justice. We are in solidarity together as we audaciously work for justice for our immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking neighbors and selves.

At Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors, we provide free legal advice and services to low income immigrants with limited options. With your support, we can continue to serve clients throughout Northern Illinois in three clinic locations. Aurora, Chicago and Rockford. Locations in Buffalo Grove and Crystal Lake are opening soon. Together let us welcome our immigrant neighbors with the gift of opportunity.

Your Donation Is Crucial During this time…

We welcome you to partner with  Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors to make a difference in the lives of the sojourners in our midst in whatever way that you are moved to partner.

With your support we can keep families together.  Making a donation like the suggested amounts below will help us expand these and other services:

$50 Donation: Advice and Counsel – Unfortunately, for some people, under current immigration laws there is nothing they can do to adjust their immigration status. Yet learning the truth about this from a trusted source like JFON has save hundreds of clients from potentially being victims of fraud. A $50 donation is the average cost to provide one family with an advice and counsel consultation.

$200 Donation: Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) – This benefit allows young people who were brought here as children to file an application to get a work permit and a “deferment” of any immigration action against them. Typically these cases take 2-10 hours – your $200 donation represents one young person receiving Deferred Action.

$500 Donation: Family Petitions or Citizenship – These applications typically take about 10-15 hours to file. Your $500 donation could help someone become a Lawful Permanent Resident or Citizen of the United States.

$1000 Donation: U Visas – One of JFON’s most common cases is the U Visa case. The U Visa was created by Congress to encourage undocumented victims of serious crimes to come forward to report crimes without the fear of deportation. These cases involve several steps including interaction with local law enforcement and our attorneys spend anywhere from 20-30 hours on each one.

$5,000 Donation: Asylum – Men, women and children flee their country of origin for many reasons, including being persecuted because of their race, religion, political opinion, or gender. JFON attorneys represent such asylum-seekers to ensure that they will not be forced to return to a country where they will surely face persecution, torture or death. These are among the most time-consuming cases to file, usually between 50-60 hours per case.
